METU - TAF Modeling and Simulation R&D Center

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is MODSIMMER?
MODSIMMER is Modelling and Simulation Research and Application Center Institution established by Middle East Technical University (METU - Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (UDI).

2) Why was MODSIMMER established?
Middle East Technical University - Turkish Armed Forces Modeling and Simulation Research and Development Center (METU-TAF MODSIMMER) is established to facilitate the development of an integrated Joint Operations Simulation System (JOSIMS) in line with 21st Century technologies and standards based on a collaboration agreement among Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) and Middle East Technical University (METU).

3) When was MODSIMMER established?
The METU-TAF Modeling and Simulation (MODSIM) joint activity was first initiated in June 1999 as a Research and Development (R&D) laboratory. Later, in May 2001, it took the center status, known as METU-TAF MODSIMMER. Nowadays, the center is planning to expand its activities in order to become a Center of Excellence for Modeling and Simulation Technologies with the support of State Planning Organization.

4) What is Modelling and Simulation?

Modelling:

A model is a simplified representation of a system at some particular point in time or space intended to promote understanding of the real system.

Simulation:

A simulation is the manipulation of a model in such a way that it operates on time or space to compress it, thus enabling one to perceive the interactions that would not otherwise be apparent because of their separation in time or space.
